Diagnosis:Dyslexia – A Parent’s Initial Reaction

What was your initial reaction when you first heard the diagnosis, “your child is dyslexic?” Were you at last relieved to have “dyslexia” attached to his academic struggles OR were you still reluctant to believe that anything was wrong with his school performance that extra tutoring wouldn’t help?

It’s true that some parents continue to be in denial about their child’s diagnosis while others embrace it with relief, knowing that academic support will soon follow. In the end, both sets of parents only want the best for their child, so being educated about dyslexia will help clarify their concerns.

A good starting point is online with professional organizations such as the International Dyslexia Association, National Council for Learning Disabilities and the Yale Center for Creativity and Dyslexia.  Within their pages, you’ll gain additional understanding and support that can further help you in determining the proper diagnosis for your child.
